Tips for a better webcam picture

Webcam not detected?

Windows 10 & 11: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera → allow apps and desktop apps. In Device Manager, check “Cameras” for errors. Some laptops have a camera key (often F8/F10) or a physical privacy shutter.

macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera → enable your browser. Then quit and reopen the browser.

Phones: allow camera access for the browser in the phone settings. On phones you can switch between front and rear cameras in the “Camera” list.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my webcam not working in the browser?
Most often the browser has no permission. Click the camera or lock icon in the address bar, allow camera access and reload. On Windows check Settings → Privacy & security → Camera, on macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. Also close Zoom, Teams, OBS or other apps that may be holding the camera.
Why does the test show a lower resolution than my camera's spec?
Browsers start with a modest resolution. Choose “Full HD” or “4K” in the quality list — the test will request the highest mode and show what the camera actually delivers. USB 2.0 ports, cheap cables and low light can also force a lower mode.
What frame rate is good for video calls?
30 fps is the standard for smooth video calls and streaming. Below 20 fps motion looks choppy. Many webcams drop to 15 fps in dim light — add light in front of you to bring the frame rate back up.
Is my video recorded or uploaded?
No. The video stays on your device and is processed only by your browser. A snapshot is saved only if you click “Download”.
Why is the image mirrored?
Most video apps show you a mirrored preview because it feels natural, while other people see the unmirrored image. Use the “Mirror” toggle to switch.
